The avatars are everywhere!

Jakob will be speaking about avatarism and human programming. He will experiment with physical surrender to instructions and rules in a playful and exploratory fashion. Between the experiments contemporary and ancient examples of avatarism and algorithmic being are identified.

Jakob will be speaking about Avatars in Movies, Games and Performance in a panel debate at Inkonst in Malmö, Sweden thursday the 17th 2012 at 15:00.

Avatar, the body which is filled by an external force, is a recurring character who raises issues of power and agency. Sci-fi movies like Existenz (1999), Avatar (2009), Strange Days (1995), Gamer  (2009) and Surrogates (2009) deal with different kinds of Avatar being. In the digital game worlds, the avatar is our tools for play and interaction. Even in the performing arts avatars have started appearing in various ways. A conversation between Ebba Petrén and Gabriel Widing from Avatarvaro choreographer Sebastian Lingserius and game designer Jakob la Cour. There will be various examples. The discussion will be led by Thom Kiraly running podcast Strange Torment Faithful.

Avatar Laboratory was an experimental workshop with different means to take control of each others’ bodies. An “avatar” is a body that chooses to be controlled by an outer force, which means that the human avatar will experience life without making its own decisions. The workshop offered both the sensations of being the avatar and of controlling the avatar.

Organizers was Ebba Petrén, Gabriel Widing & Jakob la Cour. Solmukohta 2012.

Jakob will be speaking about ‘Building Dramatic Trans-Reality’ at a transmedia course arranged by Ozma Speldesign in collaboration with KulturKraft Syd. The course will run September 21 – 22, 2011 in Malmö, Sweden.

Reality is becoming more data complex, virtual and hyper. Cross- and transmedia can become the framework tool that filter the reality and point out pathways through the various layers now that we are going to navigate in data based hyper-locations. A lecture about the bricks we need when we want to build dramatic trans-reality experiences.

Jakob la Cour has been invited to guest lecture on a course about concept development in cross- and trans-media. Jakob will be speaking about ‘Designing a Universe: Idea and concept development’. Martin Ericsson from Bardo will also be speaking at the course.

The course is arranged by Ozma Speldesign in a collaboration with KulturKraft Syd. The course will run September 21 – 22, 2011 in Malmö, Sweden.

Target group
Writer, playwright, directors, filmmakers, choreographers, etc. in the performing arts and film / television who want to develop a writing / creation of scripts for new interactive media.
